Compassion is at the very heart of the Christian faith. It is more than just feeling sorry for someone; it is love in action. As followers of Christ, we are called not just to feel compassion but to live it out in tangible ways.
1. God’s Compassion for Us
Lamentations 3:22-23 (NIV)
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
God’s compassion is constant and unfailing. From the very beginning, we see a God who deeply cares for His people, forgiving and restoring them despite their failures. His mercy is fresh every day — a model for how we should treat others.
2. Jesus: The Ultimate Example of Compassion
Matthew 9:36 (NIV)
“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
Time and again, Jesus showed compassion — feeding the hungry, healing the sick, raising the dead, and comforting the broken. His compassion wasn’t passive. It moved Him to action.
John 11:35
“Jesus wept.”
Even in His divine nature, Jesus wept with those who grieved. He was present in their pain. Compassion means stepping into another’s shoes and bearing their burdens.
3. Our Call to Compassion
Colossians 3:12 (NIV)
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
Compassion is not optional for the Christian. It is part of our spiritual clothing — something we must intentionally put on each day.
1 John 3:17-18 (NIV)
“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
Our faith must be demonstrated by how we care for others, especially the vulnerable. It’s in our actions — not just our words — that the love of God is truly seen.
To live a life of compassion is to reflect the very nature of God. When we show mercy, kindness, and care for others, we become instruments of God’s love in a hurting world. Let us be moved, like Jesus, with compassion — not only in thought, but in deed.

Lord, fill our hearts with Your compassion. Help us see others as You see them. Move us to act with kindness, generosity, and love, so that through us, others may come to know Your mercy. In Jesus’ name,
